A natural, local solution

A shepherd tends his flock at Matendla school

When Matendla school needed fertilizer for its school farm, educators came up with a creative, local solution: the nearby village of  Banjerupalli.

Many Banjerupalli residents are shepherds. Matendla invited them — and their flock — to stay at the school for two nights. The school provided lodging and food for the shepherds; in turn, the sheep provided fertilizer for the farm.

While the service normally costs Rs 300, the shepherds kindly charged Matendla only Rs 250.
